Background

Born and raised in Ala Mhigo, X'rahji struggled for most of his childhood and teen years. His father died in a mine collapse when he was very young, leaving him and his mother without a means to get by. Thankfully they were taken in on a farm where his mother worked tirelessly and was paid in nothing except the roof over their heads and a meal every day. It was all the owners could afford unfortunately.He earned his keep when he was old enough, joining his mother on the field along with other tasks around the farm. His favorite being chopping wood with his very own axe, which the owners had given him when he was but 10 years old.All his life he had yearned for freedom, freedom from the imposing shadow of the Garlean Empire. His mother, though scared of him openly speaking of rebellion, listened to him on the many nights he cried and mourned the life they could never live. Or so he thought. At around 16 he came into contact with a group of defectors and soon was informed of a secure escape plan they were planning to go through with. Together with his mother they attempted to flee from the place they called home.The circumstances of his escape from that point on are a bit of a mystery. He doesn't talk about them and tries to forget the night all together. If him living alone in Ul'dah is any indication, things probably didn't go as planned.He was a refugee for a couple years, living outside the gates to Ul'dah, earning a living by chopping fire wood and other forms of labor. It was no secret that the city's more scummy citizen enjoyed walking about the tents that lined the walls and harassing those who lived there. Two such individuals came upon X'rahji one night and decided he would be an easy target. A mistake that would cost them. In an act of self-defense, and maybe a bit of rage, he beat the two men to within an inch of their lives. For this, he was thrown into a cell, his word against the "respected" citizens.As it would happen, the offenders were members of the Gladiator's Guild, and upon hearing of the circumstances the Guild Master decided to speak with X'rahji. When he told his side of the story the Guild Master was disgusted, kicking the men from the guild and offering X'rahji a sum of money for the trouble. He, however, asked for something different. Having seen the many brawls upon the sands outside the gates, he asked to work at the Coliseum in Ul'dah. Not only was he given his wish, but also a home within the walls, where he now resides and spends his days either working or sitting about Pearl Lane.
